A Question of Sex
Matt Aitken
Once part of the record-producing and songwriting trio Stock,
Aitken and Waterman, Matt Aitken, 39, now runs his own record
company with Mike Stock. He lives with his girlfriend of seven
years, Kate, and their two daughters, Isobel, six, and Romy,
three. He talks to ANNA LOUISE HARRIS.
Who was your first girlfriend?
I don't really remember the first, but I did develop a huge crush
on a girl two years above me in school when I was about six. She
was called Janet and I followed her around with moony eyes while
she hardly acknowledged my existence.
Do you remember your first passionate kiss?
It was outside the local youth club when I was about 14 or 15.
Unfortunately, when I saw the girl the next day she wanted
nothing more to do with me.
Who first broke your heart?
Throughout my teens I developed endless crushes which were never
reciprocated. But I have never forgotten the time my girlfriend
left me for a much older man when I was about 28. I couldn't
understand what she saw in him.
Who told you the facts of life?
I learned most of them from graffiti in the school loos and
friends in the playground.
What immediately attracts you to a woman?
A beautiful face, and then the rest of the body in descending
order. A sense of humour is essential. I am also attracted to
unusual-looking girls. I once went out with a Pamela Anderson
type, but I realised that kind of stereotyped girl wasn't for
me.
What turns you off?
Bad teeth.
What is your best chat-up line?
When I met Kate I already had a girlfriend. But after that
relationship ended, I discovered that Kate was a devoted
Wimbledon Football Club fan. I called and asked her what she was
going to do on Saturday nights now that the football season had
finished. I must have caught her on the hop because she agreed
to a date.
Should men always make the first move?
No. Women have made passes at me and it can be flattering,
unless of course you aren't attracted to them.
Is promiscuity ever acceptable?
Not these days, although I believe that it is in man's nature to
sleep around. But society would be in chaos if this wasn't
somehow restrained. I would hate to be a teenager nowadays and
I worry for my children when they grow up.
Is there too much sex on television?
I think the nine o'clock boundary is gradually being pushed
forward and I'm concerned about children being exposed to things
they shouldn't. I watched Top Of The Pops with my children
recently and Michael Jackson was dancing very provocatively,
which I thought was wrong. I don't want my children to see such
things, but it is getting harder to stop them.
What is the most erotic film you have seen?
Fatal Attraction.
When did you lose your virginity?
It was with a girl I had known for about six weeks when I was 17
or 18. Although the first time was a bit of a disappointment,
I still felt like doing a lap of honour afterwards.
What was your most embarrassing encounter?
It happened on a first date with a girl I really liked. We went
out one evening and had a great time, although I remember being
surprised that she didn't want to dance. I drove her home and
stopped the car to kiss and cuddle. When I put my hand on her
knee, I suddenly realised that something wasn't quite
right. She had a wooden leg.
What is the most unusual place you have made love?
In an InterCity loo on the way from London to Manchester. It was
difficult in such a confined space, but somehow we managed it.
What excuses do you use if you don't want to have sex?
I'm too hot/tired/drunk/in a bad mood/my recurring back problem
has just recurred.
Do you think lovemaking improves with age?
Everyone goes through good and bad phases, although I think you
become more controlled as you get older. Nothing can be as
exciting as that first time.
What do you like to do immediately after making love?
Cuddle a bit, then smoke a cigarette.
How many sexual partners have you had?
About 20.
What does your partner find most attractive about you?
Kate and I are mentally very similar which attracts us both,
although we are, perhaps, sometimes too alike.
Have you ever had a one-night stand?
Yes, when I was younger. I've had to sneak out or quite a few
houses holding my shoes.
Have you ever been to a strip club?
Kate and I stayed in Bangkok once and decided we had to see one
of the infamous strip shows. It was a hair-raising performance
to say the least, and, to my mind, sex degraded in this way has
absolutely no charm or attraction.
Who, in the public eye, has sex appeal?
I think fame itself gives people sex appeal. It's amazing how
many people become attractive to others just because they've been
on the television. Specifically, I find Cindy Crawford, Eve
Pollard and Sharron Davies all very sexy.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
Yes, absolutely. Love and lust are inextricably linked and it
is completely natural to meet someone and think: 'I could fall
in love with this person.'
Do you ever wish you had been born a woman?
No. I am happy being a man, although it might be nice to be an
attractive woman, as you would have lots of pursuing admirers to
choose from.
Stock and Aitken's latest release is Saturday Night by Sindy on
Love This Records, out on Monday.
