HAZELL DEAN
WHO'S LEAVING WHO?
Whether its from her 70's TV appearances with Elaine Paige on middle-of-the
road music show, 'One More Time', her tireless touring of the nations clubs,
or more probably one of her several disco classics, everyone knows Hazell
Dean. Quiet for the last three years she's now back with a new single on
a new label after a long standing connection with SAW and PWL. Like other
stable-mates, such as Sonia it seems like musical differences crept in.
"I left PWL in 1991 because basically I didn't feel I could go any further
with them. I wanted to do certain things and they basically weren't prepared
to do them so we parted company. Since then I've really got stuck into
writing."
Tarred with the Waterman brush?
"We tried fir a couple of deals here and there, but because of the whole PWL
stigma it was a bit difficult for a while. I've now signed a new deal with a
new company called 'Wicked Vibes' and I've also been busy doing lots of shows.
I wrote and co-produced the new single 'My Idea Of Heaven' with a guy called
Barry Upton and I'm really happy with it, it's more 90's. The last thing I
did with PWL was a song called 'Better Off Without You', which we took to
the clubs and everything, but I new instantly, even though it was a good
song, that it was an 80's song and I just knew we had to move on to other
things."
So what makes Hazell Dean angry?
"I can't stand people who are rude, that really gets to me."
So who's your idea of rude?
"Bananarama. On certain occasions I've bumped into them and I've always
tried to be pretty friendly with people, but I always felt I got a cold
response from them. Their manager was quite friendly, but ... I always got
a cold response from them so in the end I gave up."
You've been doing this for a long time now, can you see a time when you'll
pack it in?
"No, especially not now that I'm involved in the writing. Actually I'm
involved in a few things at the moment. I've been writing with Ian Levine
(one of Take That's producers) and I actually wrote three tracks for the
Bad Boys Inc album including the title track 'Take Me Home'. This year
I've also written some songs for pantomimes. I wrote one for Letitia Dean
(Sharon from Eastenders) who's in Panto in Stockport."
Never one of the bevvy of babes SAW launched into the music business in
the 1980's, Hazell's obviously moving in the right direction career-wise.
And after Lulu's success with Take That, maybe there's a Hazell/Bad Boys Inc
track in the pipeline.
