Tina's doing more than killing time
by Ara Jansen
MUSIC POP UK
FOUR hit singles in the UK have made Tina Cousins one of Britain's
brightest dance pop stars. You might also have seen her as part of the
Thank Abba For The Music tribute with Steps, Bewitched, Cleopatra and
Billie, which raced up the charts earlier this year.
"I've had a mad year," says Cousins who has played more than 100 shows
in the past year, sometimes playing four different venues a night. "I've
toured everywhere, to places like Beirut and had three No. 1 songs in
Lebanon.
"In places like that they know every word to every song. It's very
exciting."
The singer confesses she's happy to have passed the one-hit-wonder level
and is in Perth today to promote her album, Killing Time. The album
features the current single, Forever, as well as the club anthem Pray,
the title track and her DJ Sash collaboration, Mysterious Times.
Cousins has been singing since she gave up the catwalk more than five
years ago. And though there have been cries of "model turned singer",
Cousins says she's always sung but until recently has "never just gone
for it".
"Originally my style was a lot more drum and bass and jazz," she says.
"I started writing with some local writers and we sold 10,000 copies of
this single. That's what got Pete Waterman involved.
"Moving into dance just seemed a natural progression."
Waterman wrote and produced Killing Time.
"I think people do expect it to be full on dance all the way through but
there are other sorts of things on my album like ballads," Cousins says.
"But singing live is what I am about and if I couldn't do that I
probably wouldn't do it at all."
Tina Cousins will perform at Heaven (187 Stirling Street, Perth)
tonight. She will also sign autographs at Trax City from 5pm.
