MIX MAGAZINE (DENMARK), OCTOBER 1988

We'll be band of the year in '88 ...

English translation by Steen Ulrich

Nothing less, claims leadsinger Nathan Moore, who called up MIX's Pjotter, and talked about the old motown, plants, sandals and of course their producers - SAW, who else???

If you turn on the radio in England, you are bound to hear "The Harder I try" by Brother Beyond. It's a new song, with a touch of the motown sound . Motown is the record company that created Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder. The song is a tribute from SAW, through Brother Beyond, who's leadsinger is Nathan Moore.

I heard that you once sold plants?

Ha...ha..ha.. Yes, that's true. It was right after I left school. I didn't have much money , but then I got a job at a garden centre, and I made 5 pounds a day. Thank god I was fired after a short time, and started as a runner at a film company. - But those jobs weren't really my cup of tea. All I thought about was reggae music, so I formed a "white" band with my sister, which we called "Marie & Donny of Reggae" (with reference to The Osmonds.)

You were a hippie, right?

- Yes, I had sandals on my feet, and had long hair!

....And now you are produced by the ultra commercial disco boys Stock-Aitken-Waterman. Talk about change?

Yes, it's amazing. But we all evolve, and to my defence, it is 5 years ago. And I must say, that SAW really are great! A lot of people say all sorts of crap about them, because they are so succesful, and because their music sounds so distinctive. But people forget that they are incredibly talented technical musicians, and they also forget how hard it is to make just one hit single. We are the first real band to work with them, and it's been rewarding for both them and us. We learned from their songwriting, and they learned from our ideas. It's been fifty-fifty through the whole production, and we will continue that on our album, which comes out in October.

Your single "The Harder I Try" is a tribute to Motown. Why?

It was Pete Waterman's idea. He's crazy about the old Motown stuff, which have given him so much. We in the band are also crazy about Smokey Robinson, Four Tops and are very inspired by black music.

You have said that Brother Beyond is going to be the biggest band in '88?

That's right..We will be. Soon our album comes out, and then we're going on a tour filled with surprises. We are great on stage and at playing live, so I have no doubt that Brother Beyond is the best pop group at the moment!

Well, get out there, and show us how good you are.

Yeah!!!
